What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card is a residence and work permit for highly skilled non-EU citizens. In Bulgaria it allows:

Employment in a position requiring higher education or specialized skills

Residence for up to 4 years (renewable)

Family reunification with simplified conditions

Mobility within other EU countries after 18 months

Process

Application procedure

Step 1

Employment Agency

Employer applies to the National Employment Agency for permission to hire a non-EU national.

Step 2

Migration Directorate

Applicant or employer submits all documents to the Migration Directorate for review.

Step 3

Processing

Authorities review the case. Processing time: 2–3 months.

Step 4

Visa D

If abroad — obtain Visa D (Type D) from a Bulgarian consulate before entry.

Step 5

Blue Card issued

Receive your Blue Card residence permit — valid up to 4 years, renewable.
